Managing Director
Over many years of working within a mainstream school, taking on many roles and challenges including class teacher as well as extensive experience of Looked after children in a home setting. I understand the pressures both on teachers and on the children, they teach.
Over this time, I have come to believe that children are the centre to their own learning, and it is our job as education providers
“if they don’t learn the way we teach it is our responsibility to change the way we teach to the way the child learns”
Our Core Values
Student-centered learning moves students from passive receivers of information to active participants in their own discovery/learning process. What students learn, how they learn it and how their learning is assessed are all driven by each individual student’s needs and abilities. We at 1-2 Achieve believe that when students take responsibility for their own learning, they become explorers capable of leveraging their curiosity to solve real-world problems.
- By reducing the risk of students being labeled “bad at schoolwork” or “not too smart” or even “gifted,” student-led learning helps kids understand that “potential” is not reserved for a chosen few. (Anyone who has tried to motivate a teenager who considers him- or herself “dumb,” or even worked with the “smart” kid who has a secret inferiority complex over not always getting 100%, should easily see the problems with judging by academic achievement.)
- Student-led learning gives kids permission to make mistakes and to “try, try again,” which leads to greater achievements than attempting only what promises quick success.
- Student-led learning encourages children to think for themselves, rather than simply following instructions, from an early age.
- Student-led learning provides for a broader range of skill development and learning styles than do academic approaches which impose a narrow list of predetermined priorities.
- Student-led learning makes the classroom less of an “institution” and more of a community, encouraging all-around mutual support rather than competition and bullying.
- Student-led learning makes kids partners in their own education, which translates to higher levels of cooperation and interest. When kids who once came to school because “Grown-ups say I have to” start showing up eager for more, you’re seeing one major benefit of student-led learning.
At 1-2 Achieve we believe pastoral care in education is critical, (Furrer & Skinner, 2003) explained “Effective pastoral care is linked to academic engagement and performance,” It was deduced that fostering friendly relationships among learners. These factors have been identified as solutions to improve truancy and other forms of absenteeism as well as enhance resilience and, hence, academic outcomes for learners.
Following extensive research by the institute of education, university of london shows :-
- Better emotional wellbeing is associated with higher achievement in primary school,
- Children’s attention problems have been shown consistently to predict lower
academic achievement at all ages, - Problematic behaviour becomes associated with poorer academic achievement as
children grow older, - Being bullied is associated with lower achievement for both primary and secondary
school pupils, and - Children’s measures of school wellbeing have been found to be associated with
academic progress in secondary school, but not in primary school.
Compassion is the ability to understand the emotional state of another person or oneself. It is based on empathy, respect and dignity. While empathy is the ability to put yourself in the other person’s place and understand their distress, compassion has the additional element of actively wanting to help them.
It’s the ability to understand and sympathise with the emotional state of another person while having the motivation to help and prevent their distress.
We believe compassion and respect should be a core component of education as a compassionate approach to teaching and pastoral roles can help staff better understand and assist pupils and students with varying degrees of backgrounds, behaviours and Additional Learning Needs (ALN). A greater and more compassionate understanding of pupils and students can improve outcomes for that child or young person and help shape a more positive future for them.
We as well as students value consistency, Inconsistency causes confusion, indecisiveness and a feeling of injustice. It destroys trust, community spirit and a positive school climate. Staff and students need definite rules, policies and structure. This framework makes their everyday lives predictable, fair and stable. When everyone knows the rules, discipline, safety and academic performance improve. This happens only when they know that the rules will be enforced.
The reason we feel resilience is so important, is that pressure, difficulty and frustration is a fact of daily life, and not just an occasional event or incident. Becoming more resilient at dealing with daily hassles can also help you deal with the really big problems that come along.
Many children and young people we work with at 1-2 Achieve struggle with the ability to cope in a mainstream setting, and have experienced a feeling of low self-worth and low self esteem. For some this leads to heightened behavioural issues and an inability to work affectively and build positive relationships. Others will have been pre-wired to believe they are under achivers, and incapable of changing their future. It is crucial in our work to make sure that children can receive this type of restorative teaching and building in self belief if they are to have a chance of recovery.
At 1-2 Achieve we understand that achievement and success means different things to different people, for some it may be achieving an A** grade in GCSE Math and for others it may be the ability to remain engaged in a lesson for a full hour or even learning to tie their own shoe laces.
The feeling of achievement and success is very important for building self belief and self-esteem which in turn makes you feel positive, confident, and optimistic about all the good and bad times. It has an indirect influence on your success. If you believe in your abilities and talent, it can show you the path of success.
